The Source for this Sustainable, Renewable Earth Friendly Product

All Ecofir flooring is milled from salvaged or sustainably harvested timber. Much of our Douglas-fir timber comes from an old sawmill site on Saturna Island that has been collecting logs from various sources for over 40 years, many of the larger logs were purchased from local beachcombers when logging was a major industry in BC and loose logs floating free from log booms were common. Other logs were either salvaged windfall timber or trees that needed to be removed for roads or building sites which is still a source of timber today. Read More

Benefits of Western Red Alder

Alder has a unique chemical makeup to cause it to transform a variety of colors and tones depending on how it is dried after milling. Most if not all commercially available alder is kiln dried immediately after milling stopping the natural coloring process resulting in a uniform white wood. Listening to our customers that want a variety of colors and tones highlighted by natural oils has made us produce alder flooring with these characteristics. By only harvesting when the sap levels are low, carefully storing the milled planks outside in a moist environment then introducing steam to the kiln just before final drying we are able to achieve the natural colors and tones nature intended for this dynamic wood. Easy Finishing

The best finish for a Douglas-fir floor is an easy to apply oil finish. This simple finish that just brushes on then wipes off enhances the natural coloring and develops a beautiful patina that gets better with age. Minor scuffs and scratches do not show as there is no clear coat finish to scratch. An oil finish feels great on your bare feet and major scratches can be easily repaired, just sand the damaged area and apply more oil. Read More

Edge Grain vs Flat or Mixed Grain

Edge grain Douglas-fir also referred to as VG or vertical grain fir is the millwork industry standard for high end doors and windows and select millwork projects. Wide VG planks can only come from very large old growth Douglas-fir, their slow growth produces a tight growth ring pattern sought after by fine cabinet makers. VG fir must be carefully and selectively milled from the raw log to produce this cut, it requires an experienced sawyer, high quality logs and the appropriate sawmill to produce this cut. Read More
